Linux Standards Previous Up Next

The purpose of the Linux Standard Association (LSA) is to define a minimum standard for the Linux Operating System based around already defined, extensively deployed, and recognized standards. These standards will allow software and hardware vendors to port existing applications and develop new products that will interoperate with minimal effort on the part of all involved parties.

The goal of the Linux Standard Base (LSB) is to develop and promote a set of standards that will increase compatibility among Linux distributions and enable software applications to run on any compliant Linux system.

The Filesystem Standard (FSSTND) and its successor, the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard (FHS) has been designed to be used by Unix distribution developers, package developers, and system implementors.
